The American Red Cross was a principal player in the response to the 1918 deadly flu epidemic. Then, as today, the organization responded to the nationwide crisis in record time, supplying needed nursing and other healthcare professionals, emergency supplies, and organizational expertise to serve those affected by the health crisis. The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton and is an independent, volunteer-led organization which is supported by voluntary contributions from the public. It continues to be a principal supplier of aid to victims of disaster in the United States and around the world.
